Electrical Wiring in the Home/electric generators
Expert: Rick Miell - 11/8/2005
QuestionHow do I determine what size electric generator is appropriate for home emergency use during times of short term natural disasters?
AnswerHi William.
I have included a link to a generator supply chain, which has a calculator to figure what your requirements would be. You have to decide what it is that you want to keep powered. I know for a fact that a 200amp single phase generator will run you around $15,000, not including installation, so the more you can keep off the list, the better the price will be.
I believe most people keep a furnace, some lights, some outlets (say for a radio/tv and a refrigerator), and that is all.
After you have decided how much power you will be needing, search the internet for generator supply sites, to get a feedback on prices.
I hope this has helped.
