This was a great answer, but I do need to add one item. Nickoli Tesla actually invented AC, and had a long battle with Edison over the two different types of electricity. Tesla eventually sold his electric motor to Westinghouse, and made hardly any money off the deal, and died pennyless.

It was actually Nikkola Tesla who invented alternating current and George Westinghouse was the 'money' behind the technology.
