Question Hi,
I believe and have also heard several places recommend that to achieve best energy and cost efficiency it's best to keep your thermostat at 78 degrees F(or higher)during summer months and that you should not turn it off when you leave(unless going on a vacation). I also understand that cost saving is directly proportional to every degree temp is raised during summer (and that it works the other way in winter).
My friend (also an engineer) argues that it is NOT "logical" to leave it on and the AC should be turned OFF (not down) EVERY time you leave the house which would save even more energy.
Could you please clear this confusion (logically and technically if possible)?
Also it would be a big help if you could share some site(s) that have technical explanations behind what should be done to save more energy?
Thanks a lot!

Answer I think your engineer friend is more correct.
It is better to turn-off our air conditioner when you are moving out.
It is true that the power (or resources) required to start any machine is more than the power required to keep it running, but when the machine is OFF, no power is required.
So it depends on time duration you are talking of. If the time is less, you can keep it ON, otherwise switch it OFF.
