I'd like you to watch this youtube video on basic dc circuit idea which explains about current flow vs electron flow in an batteries external circuit connections.

Potential difference is merely the voltage difference from one point to another in a circuit system.  You must learn about ohm's law and circuit ideas to fully appreciate this concept.  But, for example a battery connected to an external circuit uses its voltage and stored current to produce a flow of the positive charge.

See the battery with 9v potential feeding a resistor in the attached jpg image.
