About Marsha Cunningham
Expertise
My expertise is in 1st-3rd grade, I specialize in beginning reading and writing, but I teach drawing and painting first to help students gain confidence. I also use jigsaw puzzle strategy to teach concentration as a subject and enlist parents to keep their children away from scary movies, among other things, which cause nightmares, sleep deprivation and low test scores!

Experience
I have taught K-3 for 24 years, given in-service to parents and teachers and presented at reading conferences. To see my children's art work and examples of improved test scores go to www.artsimprovingacademics.org

Question
My 5 year old who will be 6 shortly after she enters kindergarten this fall is quite bright. I want to have her prepared on site words and phonics to help her learn to read.  I have researched and there are quite a few programs to help with this.  Hooked on Phonics is very well known.  Do you know much about these programs and do you find them helpful.  I wanted to work with her over the summer and want to make sure I get an adequate program.  Can you advise?  She currently can write her name an names of all her friends.  Not so good with spelling other words at this point.  We read often to her and she loves to read with us but hasn't caught on like some of the other kids have.

Answer
Hi Joyce,

Well, I'm a little biased, as I wrote up my own program after I used it to teach my 4 year old daughter to read in less than two months.  I then used it as a handbook/manual/textbook in my K-3rd grade classes.  It's geared for beginning reading, but many 2nd and 3rd graders needed it.

If you would like to try it, you can see it on my website
www.wholephonics.com and download it free.   Click on e-book and take a look at it.

You may also purchase a hard copy -coil bound with color cover for 30.00.  It has a money back guarantee and a "hot-line" number so I can coach you on each step, if you need clairifcation.

I just completed my latest (8th) edition and have it back from the printer.

If you have any questions please call me at 909-629-4158.

Marsha
