About Maria Batkovic
Expertise
I can answer any question concerning primary grade (K-3rd) education from the perspective of the student, parent or teacher. My speciality was designing highly creative ways to teach all levels of reading, writing, spelling and math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and fractions). In the last few years, I also became very adept at dealing with students with learning disabilities integrated into mainstream classrooms.

Experience
I taught 2nd grade for more than 25 years in Catholic schools in New York City and Northern California.

Question
Hi Maria,
Just received the results of my daughter's terra nova tests.  She is going into 4th grade and scored in the high 90's percentile for reading, vocabulary, reading composite and language.  Her "grade equivalent scores range from 11.0 - 12.9.  I guess I want to know if it is really possible that she is 9 years old and at a 12.9 GE level for reading or do these test results mean something that I am not understanding?  If these results do mean she is at a 12.9 GE level, what should I be requesting of her 4th grade teacher to make sure she is challenged and happy in school this year?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tammy

Hello Tammy, Here is a website you may want to glance at.

Testing gives both parents and teachers an idea of how the student is achieving. It is only one type of measurement  The most important factors are the students daily achievements and evaluations. It is important that parents sit down and discuss the testing results with their child's teachers.  They will point out the student's strengths and weaknesses.  At that time recommendations can be made by the teacher both challenging the student or any reinforcement if necessary.Have a great year.
