Email - transferring aol emails to my desktop/docs

Hello Lori, I am planning on switching from aol to verizon. The problem is that I have many folders and general mail on aol that I need to save to my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. Short of printing out every one of them and saving as hard copies, I need to know how transfer these important docs. Obviously (lol)I am not an IT person, so a simple step by step explanation woud be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU in advance for your time. Regards, Sharon R.
