Question We have a small company wherein we provide health insurance coverage to our 6 full-time employees which we define as working over 32 hours a week. We have now been told by an insurance agent that the law requires us to offer health insurance coverage to any employee working 25 hours or more a week. We are in Florida. I can find no information stating this fact. I see some evidence that we CAN offer health insurance to an employee working 25 hours a week, but not that we HAVE to do so. Do we have to offer coverage to an employee working as few as 25 hours a week, which we define as part-time?
Answer You do not have to offer coverage to part time employees. We offer 1/2 coverage so our part time pay for 1/2 of their benefit and we pay for 1/2 of it.
Do make a policy stating that only full time employees receive benefits and they are not offered to part time employees. Make sure all employees get a copy of this policy.
