Employment Law - last minute required schedule changes

Expert: Thomas R. Ballas - 11/5/2009

Question
I currently manage retail.  I has always been clear that we may ask staff to help cover shifts last minute or ask permission to make changes during the current week.  Now my company is requiring me to change schedules during the same week. If they are requiring me to change tomorrows schedule today, can I really hold my staff accountable if they cannot work the new shift. How can people plan doctor appointments and other life requirements if I have to change the schedule last minute with little or no notice?  This doesn't feel right.

Answer
Kristina:

Given the corporative directive, there is not much you can do other than follow it.  Surely it will cause issues for the employees.  I would meet with all employees and explain the new directive and ask for everyone's help to make it work as best possible.
