Question Hello Barb,
I was just wondering if you might be able to answer a question of mine. This time last year I was on Lexapro and gained A LOT of weight (45lbs). I'm a vegan and try eat very healthy. I'm 18 and borderline obese (bmi: 30).
Because I weight more than I should, does that mean I could become diabetic at all, even though I eat healthy? I do have high blood pressure at the moment, and my feet swelled a little one night recently.
Could those be symptoms? I know you not a doctor, but I thought I'd see what you think. I don't know much of anything about diabetes, just that food is usually involved.
Thank you for you time :)
Answer Hi Amber,
It's entirely possible that you could become diabetic in the future, even though you try to eat healthy. You really should lose weight now, and begin exercising regularly -- vigorous exercise, like running, jogging, swimming, biking, or in-line skating. Keeping your BMI around 24, and engaging in regular exercise, is the best way to avoid type 2 diabetes. (Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disorder and is NOT caused by being obese.)
Your high blood pressure and foot swelling don't sound like diabetes, and given your age, it's pretty unlikely.
Hope this helped.
Barb
