Question
Hi I'm a 19 year old male and I did not complete high school but I do have a ged and i'm interested in pursuing my career as a Pediatrician. Right now I am not in school but I want to continue my education and i cant decide should i go to a Tech school for nursing or a 3 yr college can u please help me on this situation i dnt have any reliable resources to help me with my situation. Thank You

Answer
Dear Peter,

You say you want to become a pediatrician, so why are you going toward nursing?? Admission to medical school should be your focus here.
The "Core" Medical School Admissions Criteria is:
All applicants must meet the following 3 criteria to have their applications considered at an American medical school:
1.   Completion of 6 core classes - All admissions committees will evaluate the GPA for the following courses: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, statistics, and calculus.
2.   Sit for the MCAT - The Medical College Admission Test is discussed further on this link.
3.   Bachelor's degree* - A 4 year degree from an accredited college.
*Actually, there are some accelerated medical programs that will accept high school seniors. These are 6 year programs where the first 3 years are spent taking undergraduate courses such as biology, organic chemistry, etc. Unless you are a high school senior, this is probably not a good option for you.
Perhaps calling a pediatrician in your area and meeting with him/her for guidance / advise would be an experienced  resource for you.
Medical school admissions criteria is education plus, plus.
Back to school, and excel is the name of the game here.
Good luck in pursuing your life dream, and do not be side-tracked.
Believe in yourself, and go for your dream.

Sincerely,

Catherine Burns. RN. BS.
