Endocrinology (including Diabetes) - type 1 diabetes

Expert: Catherine Burns. RN. BS. - 10/13/2009

Question
Hi, I have 8 children, 7 girls and 1 boy.  My 11 year old was diagnosed in July with type 1 diabetes and celiac, my question is, my 6 year old now seems to be drinking alot and when I tested her 2 hours after dinner last night she was 168, this morning she was 150, I tested the other non-diabetics as they all ate the same thing at the same time, the other children were 90-100 whats the likeliness that I could have 2 kids with this, one other of my daughters has alopecia and vitilego, I called the pediatrician and she didn't seem to concerned.  Should I be concerned the 6 year old is petite, healthy and active.  Thanks

Answer
Dear Magan,
A normal blood glucose is generally 70 - 99mg/dl fasting, and 140mg/dl or below two hours after a meal. Your 6 yr. old had a 150mg/dl fasting and 168mg/dl two hrs post meal. If one child in a family has type 1 diabetes, their siblings have about a 1 in 10 risk of developing it by age 50. However, type 1 diabetes tends to have fewer tendencies to have other family members affected with diabetes than type 2.
I would recommend that you take this child to an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) who will order tests for diabetes, and do right by your child.
Good health to you and family,

Sincerely,

Catherine Burns. RN. BS.
