Expert: N. Marshall - 11/3/2009
Question Hi,
I recently had a fasting blood glucose test done the other morning. It came back elevated at 102. I did have decaf coffee with french vanilla creamer and splenda before the test, but no food. Would this have an effect on my results. I am concerned that I am prediabetic. All of my other labs, CBC, Metabolic Panel, came back normal. Could this be a sign of a serious problem.
Answer Your numbers, in spite of not being truly fasting, are in the non diabetic range
The criteria for prediabetes or impaired fasting glucose are based on at least a
ten hour fast with nothing but a glass of water and having that number being greater than 6mmol/L or in the US numbers 108 mg/dl... So your number is certainly ok even if you were truly fasting.. I expect that your flavoured creamer likely had sugar in it but I don't know for sure.. To be sure you could repeat the test but be truly fasting.
