Endocrinology (including Diabetes) - Hello. Question.

Question
I think I have Diabetes and was wondering if what I am eating is ok. I dont have insurance so exercise and eating right is what I have to do.

I eat/drink:

2% Milk
Whole Wheat Bread
8 thin slices Turkey
Whole Wheat Bagels
Protein Powder
Combination of Meat/pasta or rice/vegetable

I walk 3-4 miles a day.

Hopefully I am taking the right steps into keeping my diabetes in check?

Could I get a list of good foods to have?

Thanks.

Answer
First of all, why do you think you have diabetes?

Second -- if you DO have diabetes, you're eating way too many carbohydrates. You want to limit your carbohydrate intake to no more than 100 grams per day, with no more than 20 grams at any one meal or snack. A slice of whole wheat bread has about 18 grams. A typical bagel has about 50 grams.

Good foods to eat: lean meats, green/yellow vegetables (limit the amount on corn and carrots), fish.
