Endocrinology (including Diabetes)/diaabetes


Hello  I am an 80 yr. female.   I had a recent physical and had blood checked for diabetes.    I am in Canada and I realize the reading are a little different.  Here is my reading.
Glucose fasting reads  5.4   safe zone listed as 3.6  to 6.0
however my HbA1C  is 0.059  and listed as high.  Apparently over 6.0 is prediabetic. Better zone reads below 0.055
How close am I really to being diabetic?  If that is the case what can I do diet wise to lower it?  Does this make sense to you?

  It's very possible that you're experiencing spikes in your blood glucose after meals during the day, even though your fasting blood glucose levels are in a normal range (albeit at the high end of normal).  If you're not exercising regularly (and doing some resistance training), now is the time to start.  Also, take a look at what types of starchy foods you eat during the day and how much of them.  Sometimes just cutting back some on those types of foods can help lower your post-meal spikes.  If you can get access to a blood glucose meter, it would help if you can check before some meals and an hour after to see what foods particularly cause you to spike more.  I have lots of articles and links on my web site and blog that may help you as well (www.shericolberg.com).  Hope this helps.  Sheri

I am an exercise physiologist with a PhD who specializes in diabetes--as such I CANNOT answer general questions about other endocrine problems as I am neither an expert in all areas of endocrinology nor am I a medical doctor. My expertise lies in answering questions about diabetes (of any type) and physical activity, so please limit your questions to those areas. I have both personal and professional experience in the areas of diabetes and exercise/physical activity. On a personal level, I have had type 1 diabetes since 1968, and I have been an avid exerciser since I was a child. Professionally, I have been conducting clinical studies on diabetes and exercise since 1992, largely with funding from the American Diabetes Association.
