Endocrinology (including Diabetes) - Pre-Diabetes?

Expert: Jerry Munden - 2/7/2006

Question
Dear Mr. Munden,
How are you? I was wondering if you could help me because recently my doctor told me I had a blood sugar level of 146. Since diabetes does not run in my family, I am not overweight (I'm 22 and 5'5 and 125 lbs), and I used to be an athlete I am really surprised I would have high blood sugar. I asked if I should be concerned since she said she would have to run more tests to see if I'm pre-diabetic, and she said no. She also asked if I was fasting, because I could have a higher blood sugar level if I ate something before the blood  test. Now that I think back I really can't remember, but since the appointment was at 11am I'm pretty sure I ate some breakfast. Do you think having a blood sugar level of 146 is too high after eating? So far I have no common symptoms type II diabetes so I'm really hoping I'm ok. I would really appreciate your response and whether in your experience you feel I am at high risk for developing diabetes.
Sincerely,
Carly

Answer
Hi Carly,
Your blood sugar level of 146 is not too far out if you had recently had breakfast. You don't sound like a typical Type II being slim and active. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor and schedule a fasting blood sugar test and find out where you are at.
All the Best!
Jerry
