Question I'm interested in purchasing producing royalty interests in Oklahoma. Can you give me an idea of where to look or who to talk to?
Thanks,
Matt
Answer Hello Matt. An easy way to start is to look at commercial sites like Energynet, an oil and gas auction site. You can find it at energynet.com. The oil & gas asset clearinghouse is another good site, and can be found at http://www.ogclearinghouse.com/. Also, check out Royalty Clearing house at http://www.royaltyclearinghouse.com to see how a royalty buyer's website is set up. Drillinginfo.com can be another good source of information .about drilling and permitting activities in Oklahoma This is a subscription service but there is a trial registration you can try. Another good site to check on Oklahoma oil and gas activity can be found at http://www.pangaeadata.com/.
Many mineral and royalty buyers use the county tax records to locate producing properties and the names and addresses of the production owners, and then send out mass mailings offering to purchase these interests. You can probably buy this information from commercial services but a lot of information can be found online. Check out http://www.business.com/directory/real_estate_and_construction/appraisal/propert... for a list of online taxing districts in Oklahoma. A lot of folks are wary of selling their mineral or royalty interests
in response to an unsolicited mail offer, but it does happen. Here is an interesting article link about the perils of mail offers: http://recenter.tamu.edu/pdf/1728.pdf.
Buying royalties and minerals from sources other than commercial auction sites is highly competitive and a lot of work, and requires access to lots of information sources, many of which are expensive to access. If you are not in the business, learning where to buy minerals and royalty and why, and evaluating mineral and royalty from an economic standpoint, is an art and career in itself, and way beyond the scope of this answer.
Hopefully, this will get you started in the right direction. Good luck and let me know if you have any further questions.
