Question
Hi Maggie, this may seem trivial but I'm visiting NW England soon and have heard a few of my penfriends refer to someone as a "scally". They seemed to assume I understood and not wishing to appear ignorant I didn't want to say that I'd never heard the expression. can you help me out?
Thanks
Brian

Answer
Hullo Brian,

I presume your penfriends are from Liverpool/Merseyside.  In that part of the north west they abbreviate most things.  I understand they use the term "scally" in the same way the remainder of Lancashire (Liverpool used to be in the county of Lancashire) use the full word "scallywag."

It alludes to "a scamp or worthless fellow."  In short, a dodgy character.

I do hope you enjoy your trip to the north west and take home lots of happy memories.

Best Wishes

Maggie
