English as a Second Language/Nouns

Dear Jed,

Quote from Khalil Gibran: “When love beckons to you follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep. "

Is there a personification or a figure of speech here? Or is it just because "love" is masculine so the writer uses the pronouns "him" and "his".

I know that for personifications we  must use capital letters, so "love" must be capitalized (Love).

Thanks in advance.

Yours sincerely,
Antoine Ghannoum

Dear Antoine,

In this sentence, 'Love' is personified, regarded as a living person. I would capitalise the first letter - 'Love'. The writer has chosen to see 'love' as a male figure like, for example, Eros or Cupid. S/he could equally well have pictured love as a female figure like, for example, Aphrodite or Venus.

With best wishes,
