English as a Second Language/Re: complete definition

Hi Jed,

Is hot air ballooning considered flight or simply floating on air?  No definition seems to address that question, although I've noted hot air ballooning calling it flight.  Is this accurate?

         Thank you,

Dear Ty,

My apologies for the late arrival of this response. For some reason, my original response did not get sent.

If we are talking in terms of definition, I would consider ballooning to be 'flying/flight'. All the ballooning literature I have found uses these words.

However, in describing the experience, 'floating' is commonly used. This is how I might have described an experience I had a couple of years ago:

"A friend treated me to a hot air balloon flight last week. We flew from his club near Oxford to a park near Abingdon. Floating calmly over the Oxfordshire countryside, we had wonderful views of the River Thames."

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,
