Hi Amy,

Would you please reword the underline sentences ?

Hard Choices, P 54

Answer
It was an opening gambit in a drama, and not one I thought likely to succeed.

Gambit is an opening move when playing chess where a player makes a sacrifice (usually a pawn) for some compensating advantage.

Your sentence translates into:

I chose to make a sacrifice in a dramatic/difficult situation even though I never expected anything good to come out of this/I never expected to be successful.

I hope this helps Hossein.

Best,

Amy
