Question
Dear Amy,

What is the correct question to this answer "My flat is two km from my school"?

Q1: What is the distance between your flat and your school?
Q2: How are is your flat from your school?

On the other hand, what does "How long" imply? In other words, is it used for both time and distance? Or only for time? For example, can I give the following answers for this question "how long does it take you to get to school?"

A1: It takes me about ten minutes.(time)
A2: It takes me two kilometers. (distance)

Thanks in advance for your valuable guidelines.

Kind regards,
Antoine Ghannoum

Answer
Hello again ... quite a few questions for today Antoine ;)

What is the correct question to this answer "My flat is two km from my school"?

Q1: What is the distance between your flat and your school?
Q2: How are is your flat from your school?

>>> I'm assuming that Q2 should read: How FAR is your flat from school?

Both questions can be answered by saying: "My flat is two km (away) from my school."

On the other hand, what does "How long" imply? In other words, is it used for both time and distance? Or only for time? For example, can I give the following answers for this question "how long does it take you to get to school?"

A1: It takes me about ten minutes.(time)
A2: It takes me two kilometers. (distance)

How long can be used to answer both time and size/length questions, but not distance questions.

For ex:
How long does it take you to get to school? is a time question and can only be answered in terms of time: It takes me about ten minutes.

You can also ask questions like:
How long is the pencil you're holding? It's three inches long.
How long is the skirt you are going to wear tonight? It's quite short actually, it's above the knees.

For distance questions we use "how far...?".

For ex:
How far is it to your parents house? It's half a mile from here.
How far is the bus stop? The bus stop is 100 meters away.
How far is Las Vegas from Los Angeles? Vegas is about 450 km away from LA.

Let me know if this helps, please.

Best,

Amy
