Question
Hi Amy,
I have been wanting to learn 2  words phrases such as
1.  put down ( which sometimes means to kill an animal which is very sick )

2.Pick on ( to selectively disturb someone )

I am not sure what you call such phrases but i cant find resources to learn such words.

Please tell me what you call them and also where I can find a collection of these words ( a website link or a book )

Appreciate you time.

Roy

Answer
Hi Roy,

those are phrasal verbs.

Here are a few places where you can find lists of phrasal verbs along with their meanings:

https://www.englishclub.com/vocabulary/phrasal-verbs-list.htm

http://www.learn-english-today.com/phrasal-verbs/phrasal-verb-list.htm

http://www.gingersoftware.com/content/grammar-rules/verbs/list-of-phrasal-verbs/

There are also dictionaries - this is one I have and I find it useful:

http://www.amazon.com/McGraw-Hills-Dictionary-American-Idioms-Phrasal/dp/0071469

I hope this answers your question.

Best,

Amy
