English as a Second Language/until /unless

Question
whati is the major difference between until and unless?

Answer
The word "until" is basically a preposition used to refer to any or all time elapsed before a specific time or event, however it is often used with a conditional connotation.  A mother might say to a child "You're not going outside to play until you clean your room."

The word "unless" is basically a negative "if."  The condition that is stated following this preposition is one that makes the whatever preceded it impossible or defunct.  Someone might say "Unless I'm mistaken, the store is closed."  A clerk might say to a customer "I can't give you this product unless you give me enough money."

The key difference is that "until" is based more on time, even though it's often used with a conditional connotation.  "Unless" is purely conditional and doesn't have any temporal meaning.

I hope this helps.

I feel comfortable responding to any questions about English mechanics (i.e. grammar, syntax, spelling, diction, etc). I will answer questions from non-native and native speakers alike. I also feel moderately confident in composition style for both fiction and non-fiction. I can answer questions in Spanish, French, or Italian, but among those languages, I have the best command of Spanish. Puedo contestar preguntas en español, francés, o italiano, pero entre esos idiomas, tengo el mejor dominio del español. Je peux répondre aux questions en espagnol, français, ou italien, mais parmi ces langues, j’ai la meilleure maîtrise de l’espagnol. Posso rispondere alle domande in spagnolo, francese, o italiano, ma tra quelle lingue, ho la migliore conoscenza dello spagnolo.

Experience

I have been an excellent language arts/English student throughout my education. When I was younger, I used to read prolifically, which gave me a well-developed sense of sentence structure and style. I'm also a hobbyist fiction writer.

Organizations
I was once a member of the Suncoast Writer's Guild. My membership ceased only because my schedule prevented regular meeting attendance.

Education/Credentials
I received an A in all English or language arts courses taken throughout pre-collegiate education with the exception of one B in my junior year of high school. I also earned a score of 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam in high school. Five is the highest possible score, which gives credit for both semesters of English composition required by most universities.

Awards and Honors
I was the recipient of various school awards, including Most Improved Writer, throughout my pre-collegiate education. I've also participated in numerous spelling bees.
