Entomology (Study of Bugs) - Yellow/white tiny bugs

Expert: Sue Kayton - 10/25/2009

Question
It started in the laundry room. I thought it was nothing, just a few tiny whitish/yellowy bugs. They just look like a piece of dirt until you blow or touch it, then they run around. I have seen more and more, and they've moved to my room, the storage room and the bathroom - they're pretty much infesting my whole basement. Help! What are they? Thank you,
Erin

Answer
Without a photo or sketch, it's impossible to identify them.  They might be booklice - try googling "booklice" and see if that's what they are.  Booklice are totally harmless unless you are a book, wallpaper, dry dogfood, or glue.  If that's not what they are, catch a few and look at them with a magnifying glass.  Count the legs, then start googling.

If that fails, take a bag with a few of them to your local pest control operator or university biology department.  Good luck.
