Entomology (Study of Bugs) - dust like insect craw on wall

Expert: Ed Saugstad - 11/7/2009

Question
Hi,

Recently there is plenty of dust like insect in my room, they usually hanging on the wall and ceiling. They move really slow as we did not notice any movement from it by monitoring it for 5 to 10 minutes. Please help to identify what is this insect and any method of get rid of it.

Many thanks....

Answer
Dear Ty - These most likely are nuisance pests known as household casebearers or plaster bagworms - see http://tinyurl.com/ykbhp9y for an image. These cases are constructed by larvae (caterpillars) of moths in the family Tiniedae, to which clothes moths belong. However, these caterpillars seem to prefer to feed on old cobwebs and the like, rather than munching down on your fine woolens. See http://tinyurl.com/yazjef7 for more detailed information; about the only control necessary would be to vacuum them up and dispose in the trash.

Hope this helps,
Saugy
