Entomology (Study of Bugs) - Grey Oval "Bug" with Shell

Expert: Walter Hintz - 7/3/2009

Question
Hello, I see someone already referenced this critter, but didn't see a final answer.  Oval-shaped, grey body/shell with white center, moves like an inchworm.  Can use either end, and poke it's head out, drags the "shell" along with it.  Found in my bathroom also.  I was able to separate it from it's shell, it has a tan/beige colored body, many feet, and it's head is black with maybe a couple of rings of black behind/on the neck.  Maybe 1/2 long stretched out.  Thank you -- just worried it is some kind of parasite!  Best, Alec

Answer
Hi Alec
I get this question at least once a week.  This is small caterpillar that builds a case to hide in and drags it around everywhere.  It later develops into a moth.  It is called at this stage a plaster bagworm. They are harmless and feeds on cobwebs and spiderwebs.  Just vacuum them up.
I bet you live in Florida
