Question
Nest
Nest
I found this nest today in the woods and have spent the last hour or so looking through internet images trying to identify it. I live in southern West Virginia. I hope you can help me. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Cindy
This is a plant gall. Last spring a gall wasp laid an egg in this stem as well as growth hormones causing this increased growth of the stem when the egg hatched the maggot fed on the plant tissue pupated and finally emerged as an adult wasp. You will note a hole in the gall where the wasp came out.
