Entomology (Study of Bugs)/Concrete dust on fireplace mantle

Question
I have recently bought a house with a shelf mantle above the fire place.  When dusting there is concrete/sand on it.  Is there an insect/beetle living behind the wood mantle that would cause this?

Answer
Shirley,

Is the wall made of brick or stone, something with mortar? Do you notice any small, pencil lead-size holes in the mortar? Is the material in small piles or evenly scattered? Post a follow up and I'll help you figure this out.
