I found what looks like a very thick mushroom stem covered in bugs...I have never seen them before. I have searched online to identify but have come up empty handed. I have free range chickens that won't go near them...

These are Carrion beetles (Genus Silpha. You can Google Silpha to find out more about them)
They are important insects in recycling dead animals. They are attracted to dead things by the decaying order. I cannot see what they are feeding upon. It could be  stinkhorn fungus.
