Question
Spider
Spider
Hello,
My mother found this beautiful spider in her garden a few days ago.  She resides in central New Jersey.  Any idea of what kind of spider this may be, or any information on it?  We found it very interesting!

Thank you,
Karyn

Answer
Hi Karyn
This is an Orchard spider called the Mabel Orchard spider. The scientific name is Leuguage mabelae. When a biologist finds a new species he can give it any species name he wants. it appears like a biologist had a mother or friend named Mabel. It would be neat if your moms name was Mabel. Orchard spiders are also called Long Jawed spiders as their fangs are extra large. But they are harmless to people
