QUESTION: Dear sir,
From the past few days a weird type of insect has been appearing at my home which I have never seen before. Please help me to recognize it.

it drags its shell when moving
length = 10mm
width = 2mm

ANSWER: Dear Dev,

This is a caterpillar of a moth which carries a protective case around it all the time. It feeds on the organic debris in our house. If you have nests of any birds, especially pigeons, around window or the balcony, that could be the reason for them appearing in your home. They are harmless, and will soon emerge as tiny obscure moths. They most probably belong to the family Tineidae.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: thank you for the reply.
can you please tell me whether it has any specific name (scientific or other) so that i can know more about it.

Unfortunately it is hard to identify the species name without observing it under a microscope. You can look up moths commonly called Tineid Moths, or Clothes Moths. You can look them up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tineidae
