Evening Ed,
I live in Homosassa, FL., gulf side.  Today i photographed the colorful insect on my passion flower.  I think it is a moth but am unsure.  It has a probiscus.  I'll be sending two photos.  The fist one is a full body side view.  The second is a cose-up of the head.  It is about 3/4" long.

Dear Raph - What you have here is a black-dotted Spragueia moth, Spragueia onagrus (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This species appears restricted to the  southeastern USA mainly along the Gulf coast and the Atlantic coast up to the North Carolina-Virginia border (see http://tinyurl.com/ot9awvn for details).
Hope this helps,

Will accept most questions in general entomology, including those related to medical entomology, taxonomy, ecology, arthropod surveillance, and pest management. If you are requesting a 'mystery bug' identification, PLEASE either attach an image to your question, or post an image on a web page (such as Flickr) so that I can look at it, as verbal descriptions frequently are insufficient for a definitive identification.
