I found hundreds of these in my back yard..I live in mojave desert

Very interesting, I've not seen this one before. This is probably red bug, Scantius aegyptius (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae), a relative new invasive species in the western US. See http://cisr.ucr.edu/red_bug.html for an excellent review of this bug from UC Riverside.
