Question
Mite
Mite
An exterminator identified that I have mites at my house . I would like to know what type of mite this is exactly and the best way to get rid of them .

I will attach a photo . Exterminator says they like moisture and host in moisture areas . I found these mites on my bed .. I think they are bitting me and causing an allergic reaction .
Hope you can help and thank you for your time .

Answer
Eileen,

This is a springtail (Collembola) not a mite, see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/springtails.html for a close-up picture. They don't bite nor do they cause any sort of allergic reaction. The mites you refer to are called mold mites (see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/mold_mites.html) but they don't bite either. Mold mites are associated with damp conditions and can cause an allergic reaction similar to dust mites.
