What kind of bug is this? I found it inside my house on the side of my stairwell.

Answer
Brandye,

This is a ground beetle (Carabidae) but I don't recognize the species. These beetles are harmless, in fact are considered beneficial in that many feed on other insect pests. This one likely came in from the outside, possible carried inside on something like firewood.
