I have worked in the chemical industry and am active in professional societies, and am currently on an industrial wastes committee for the Water Environment Federation, and have taught courses in remediation in the US and abroad.
I have written one book on Remediation of petroleum Contaminated Sites, and have a second book on PRACTICAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT to be published by John Wiley in September, 2006. I've also written over 30 articles on various elements of environmental problems and cleanup. Most Recently, I have addressed a NATO Scientific and Techical Conference on Ecoterrorism, and have worked with the same group on remediation of sites contaminated with Chemical Warfare Agent materials and othe materials as well. . Question Hi,
It seems as if you just might be the person to help answer a question for me. Have 2 man made lakes within an acre of each other. The first one is perfectly clear and was clear within 6 months. The second lake is deeper but has never cleared in 9 years. Have tried all sorts of stuff to get it clear, but it is full of sediment. First, do you have any ideas? Secondly, was told that putting hay rolls in the lake might help to clear..something about when it rots. There are not lots of weeds are anything like that....have tried everything and just want to get this pond clear as well. Didn't have to do anything to the first pond. HELP!!
Answer Tell me a bit about the soil. That may be your problem. If you have fine grained (clay) soils they can stay in suspension for a long time. Also, go to the local hardware store and see if they have some pH paper. If not, I can tell you where to get some. You need to check the pH of the lake. It would also be helpful if you could get a sample of the turbid water to a laboratory for a solids analysis. The solids analysis are cheap ~ $30 or so. The Lab can also do the pH analysis for another $5-10. Then write me back please.
