Environmental Science - treatment/disposal of aircraft waste

Expert: David L. Russell, PE - 3/3/2009

Question
Dear David,
I noted an old (2007) string of Q&A on this website concerning the disposal of aircraft waste + toilet deodorant SkyKem. I am currently working on a similar project for an airport upgrade in Africa. Am I right to conclude that the waste + deodorant, after dilution (how much?), can be added to normal biological sewerage treament systems such as (an)aerobic retention/stabilisation/sedimentation ponds? The skykem chemical will not affect the bacteriological processes? Any additional comments or advise will be most welcome.
Thanks in advance

Answer
I did a bit of checking and most of the deodoizers used in planes are biodegradable. You will probably be all right, and won't have any problems.  The deodorants I viewed are ready to add to the toilets at about 1/4 oz per gallon of liquid, and are fully biodegradable. So, no problems adding them to the sewage treatment plant.
However, brands and chemical formulations do differ. I suggest that you obtain an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) on the compounds used- from the manufacturer, and they may even be on their websites. Check that for biodegradability and if you have questions, drop me a note.
Bottom line:  check, but you probably won't have any problems.
