We used to test electrostatic filters for efficiency which had a spec of collecting 99% of fine dust.

Using a suction pump pumping air through a filter paper about 2" diam. after say 10 mins filter would be black if in a slightly dirty area was being tested. we compared dirty and filtered air by comparing a 500 min stain of cleaned air with  a 5 min stain of dirty air, easy to see which is dirtiest.

Known as a blackness test as only effective with black dirt.
