Epilepsy - I don't know who to ask

Expert: Joseph DeMartino - 10/8/2004

Question
Maybe you could find some reference material on this subject. I a have temporal lobe epilepsy also and diabetes. Ive been diabetic for 36 years and have had epilepsy for 15 years. A few months ago I had gamma knife surgery for epilepsy and my blood sugars in the past twa weeks have been hard to control. It's not a common surgery and not alot of diabetics have epilepsy surgery. I hope you can tell me something. Thanks alot. Jeff

Answer
dear jeff,
first, let me wish you good luck on the success of the surgury.i also have had surgery, once in'91 and then again in'92.mine was the left temporal lobe.there is as far as i
know no connection between the two, however the first thing that came to mind is the interaction between the drugs you take for the seizures such as dilantin or neurontin and the insulin you take for the diabetes.with people like us we
must be aware of and careful with these very real interactions.i would very strongly suggest you contact your neurologist and have blood levels tested.i hope i've helped in some way.i would be very interested in knowing if your seizures have dissipated fully.best of luck     joe
