Subject: Barking

Question
Have you any idea why a dog barks consistantly at a harmless ofject? For instance: A uniformed man,or a rabbit that is outside and the dog is inside. It is not a "mean type" bark, just noisy.

Answer
Hi!  Dogs bark because they are trying to protect their territory.  They bark to say "hey, this is MY territory, you'd better leave."  It's like a warning, you can reduce the amount of this barking, or even stop it all together, but it takes time.  When he barks at something he shouldn't, don't praise or yell at him, distract him by inviting him to play a game of tug of war, or fetch.  He will soon get the picture that you aren't concerned about the rabbit, mailman, etc.  He will associate not barking with something good, like a game.  With time this method works on most dogs, but it takes a couple of weeks, sometimes months.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.  :-)
