Etymology (Meaning of Words) - Mealagh

Expert: Carol Pozefsky - 9/19/2009

Question
I live in the Mealagh Valley near Bantry West Cork Ireland, and have been told the word mealagh comes from honey. Is this right ?

Answer

Hello,  I hope you've had a fine weekend,
My etymological sources did not find a connection between 'mealagh' and honey although Irish geographical etymology is not my strong suit to be sure.  My research indicates that 'mealagh' means 'little round hill'.   Again, my cultural background was not rich in Irish place names so I would suggest that you track down an Irish etymologist for more information.
Good luck and the best to you always,
              CP
