Etymology (Meaning of Words)/Origin of the word "Performance"

Performance in the world of business and marketing is related to the results of your 'service'. It is not that You 'performed' something, nor does the stock market go dancing every day.

The award for your service is your salary. The award for your continued service is a salary increase or one-off bonus.

The award for the results of your service, is your performance-based bonus. So being awarded for 'service' instead of 'performance' is surely something suited to the employee but not the employer.

Because if the focus is always on 'service', then who is responsible for the result of that service?
