The Chumash meaning for the name "Malibu" may be "the surf is loud all the time".

I believe, as i have heard from naturalists in the malibu state park, that 'malibu' is the chumash name for the sound that waves make.

I heard on the radio that Malibu is derived from the French words "mal" and "hibou", but that it was a Frenchman who was making a map of the California coastline who simply noted that there were sick owls in that area and made a note of it on his map.

Hearing it on the radio obviously does not make it true!

A very learned Chumash man told me that it comes from the word HuMaliwo

Which meant  "big surf".
