Etymology (Meaning of Words)/mythical origins of words
Expert: Carol Pozefsky - 10/15/2006
QuestionI have been assignement that is due tuesday, and i have worked for hours on it. What I have to do, is to find the mythical origins(and state whether it is from Roman or Greek mythology) of 6 words, and connect them to their modern English meaning. The teacher gave us an example:
1. arachnid- Greek mythology: Athena turned Arachne(a very proud girl), into a spider, so she could weave forever. Arachnid is the name of the class which includes spiders.
I have done panic, jovial, and saturnine.
I still need museum, and calliope.
Any help would be appreciated!!!
thank you,
brandon
Answer
Hello, I hope you had a fine weekend,
Museum stems from the Greek word 'mouseion' which means home of the Muses. In classical mythology, there were 9 Muses, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Each was said to be the inspiration for one branch of learning; (art, dance, astronomy etc.)
Calliope was the Muse if epic poetry. A calliope is a musical instrument made up of a set of steam whistles played like an organ.
The best to you always, Carol P.
