European History/Elba

I am reading a novel about the escape of Napoleon from Elba.

They are saying that a friend of his who had many times doubled for him at events, visited him on the island.  He was a bit shorter but they took care of that with lifts in his shoes.  He switched places with Napoleon and Napoleon left as this gentlemen, leaving no one the wise.  Can this be true.
