Hi Jan
I have a sheet where I need to update it on monthly bases with Alphabet "J" "R" and "B". I am looking the formula that how will count that how many time R enter after J. I have attached the snap shot. WIll you please have alook and guide me which formula I will use.

Hi Zafar,

Suppose the r's and j's are in cells A1:P1:

Enter this formula:

=SUM(IF(A1:P1&B1:Q1="JR",1,0))

Confirm this formula using control+shift+enter so it looks like this in the formula bar:

{=SUM(IF(A1:P1&B1:Q1="JR",1,0))}

Note that the curly brackets are added by Excel by hitting control+shift+enter.

The rj combination is simple:

=SUM(IF(A1:P1&B1:Q1="RJ",1,0))
