Excel/01/00/1900 shows up in empty linked cells

I'm having an issue with cells in a workbook that is linked to another.

WB1, User Data, has a date field (D2-D400 with cells formatted to mm/dd/yyyy) and those cells are linked to WB2, Master File, D2-D400.  If the cell d2 is blank in WB1, WB2's d2 shows as 01/00/1900.  This is ugly and clutters up the worksheet but I have no idea how to blank out that field.  Is there a format I can use?

instead of using  =[workbookname.xls]Sheet1!D2

put in

so the concept is to use an if statement that checks if the linked to cell is blank.  If it is display an empty string (cell will appear blank) else display the value of the linked to cell.

My cell references are notional/illustrative -- use the cell references you are currently using.
