Question
I have a spreadsheet that I want to populate with planned data for an entire month, then in a month to date column I want to sum the data as the month progresses. Is there a way to create a formulas to sum the daily columns, but only show the amount through the current date without having to amend the formula daily?

Answer
The SUMIF formula allows you to sum the data in one column based on a single "test" in an adjacent column.

To sum the values in column B that have "Bob" in column A:

   =SUMIF(A:A, "Bob", B:B)

To sum the values in columm B that have a date in column A less than or equal to today:

   =SUMIF(A:A, "<=" & TODAY(), B:B)

If the limiting date were in a cell, perhaps D1:

   =SUMIF(A:A, "<=" & D1, B:B)

To collect the date between two dates, perhaps start date in D1 and end date in E1, you would need to switch to SUMIFS() function:

   =SUMIFS(B:B, A:A, "<=" & D1, A:A, ">=" & E1)
