# Excel/Spreasheet data clean

Question
I have a spreadsheet with a column called Serial Number.  Some of the records(but not all) have an "S" added at the beginning that I need to remove. I don't want to remove 's' from anything else in the spreadsheet, on if it occurs as the first character in a record in the Serial number column

Well, you could use the IF and LEFT functions to see if the first character is an "S". If so, remove it. If not, then don't.

=IF(LEFT(A1,1)="S",RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1-1)),A1)

This says "if the left character is "S" then make this cell the RIGHT x-1 characters (x being the length of the text); otherwise, just use A1.

You can learn about all of these functions in my various Excel tutorials.
